Who needs boys?
Luna was walking down to the lake when she heard a muffled sob from behind a bush nearby. She almost didn't investigate; the merfolk were waiting and they always had such interesting stories to tell. But she was struck by a sudden, unexplainable urge to go and see who was there, and she always followed those urges. They usually brought her good things.
She rounded the bush slowly, trying to walk as quietly as she could. The first thing she saw was a waterfall of red hair that caught the sunlight in a thousand different hues. Almost completely covered by that hair was a small figure curled up into a tight ball, shoulders shaking lightly. Ginny Weasley, the pretty and smart girl who always had a smile and a nice word for everyone. Even Luna.
She started when Luna sat down next to her and tentatively put a hand around her shoulders. "What... Oh, it's you." She relaxed visibly. "I'm done with boys," she declared next, with conviction that made little butterflies dance in Luna's stomach. "I mean, why can't Michael just accept the fact that I don't love him anymore? Why can't he leave me alone? We have talked it through for like a million times and he just keeps asking if there's anything he can do... And then he starts crying and I just feel so awful, you know?"
Luna didn't know, but nodded anyway. Carefully, she wiped a stray tear from Ginny's cheek. "Boys. Who needs them anyway?"
When Ginny looked up at her, she kissed her without pausing to think. Her lips were soft and tasted a little salty from crying. When she twined her fingers into Luna's hair and kissed back, Luna forgot that she was supposed to be somewhere else. The merfolk would understand.
